1864 Hayling Island Map

This shows the original route for the railway, built on an embankment enclosing about 1000 acres of mudland, leading to the proposed new docks near the Portsmouth Hayling ferry at the harbour mouth. This route was abandoned and the new route hugged the shoreline. It required major changes to the railway viaduct south of the swing bridge. The sweeping curve onto the embankment being replaced being straightened.
